Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park - April, 2022

This national park is located on the island of Hawaiʻi, also known as the Big Island. It gives an opportunity to witness volcanic activity from as close as it is safely possible. You will see craters of active volcanoes, lava tubes and endless fields of lava created by powerful forces of nature.

The weather at the visitor center was rainy and the staff suggested to take the 40 minute drive towards the ocean following the Chain of Craters Road

Nahuku - Thurston Lava Tube

Lava tube is a cave formed by flowing lava and this particular one was formed 500 years ago. The entrance to the tube is located in a tropical rainforest and requires a short hike down from the parking lot

Hōlei Sea Arch and Ka Lae Apuki

This arch is a result of marine erosion and is made of basalt. Due to the ongoing erosion it is not advised to come close to the arch or to any of surrounding cliffs

Tips

  • The weather varies in different parts of the park, so plan accordingly and bring a rain jacket or a poncho.
  • Fill up the gas tank (or charge your Tesla) before venturing to the park from places like Kona
  • Hiking shoes or sneakers are recommended if you are planning on walking on lava rocks
